NHS treatments
Harpenden Orthodontics is proud to provide NHS-funded treatments to eligible patients, giving even more people access to our incredible treatment options.

What is NHS treatment?
The NHS (National Health Service) provides funding for orthodontic treatment for individuals under 18 who meet specific eligibility criteria. In 2006, the NHS implemented the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN), which helps determine the necessity and urgency of a patient’s orthodontic care.
NHS funding does have limitations—for instance, it typically covers only standard treatments like fixed metal braces. Alternatives such as Invisalign® aligners are not included. To be considered for NHS-funded treatment, you must be referred by your dentist through the NHS portal, allowing us to evaluate your eligibility.

Am I eligible for NHS treatment?
Please visit your dentist to see whether you're eligible for NHS treatment - if so, your dentist will refer you and then our orthodontists will perform a free assessment of your needs, checking your individual situation against the eligibility criteria.
Once you have been assessed, we will discuss your options with you and either begin your treatment or offer you treatment alternatives.

Independent treatment
If you don’t qualify for funded treatment, or don’t want to sit on the waiting list, you are still able to be treated as an independent patient. This allows you to select from a wider range of treatment options that we offer.
You can learn more about our treatment options at your free, no-obligation consultation.
